Rob Birza – Systems in Warped Space

Rob Birza (1962) uses time and space in the Arco pavilion with his Systems in Warped Space. A straight line may seem straight, but how do you know it certainly is? If you send a line straight up out of your head into space, it will end up in the back of your head.

Birza plays around with the illusion of space. One moment he will use it convincingly on the flat canvas, while he will intentionally interfere with it the next moment. By depicting a realistic space such as a living room or a street, the artist gives direction to the space that you depict. Birza asks questions in his art about how to create space on a flat surface with only abstract forms. How does one make space without a space?
