‘Mondrian in pictures’

By Wietse Coppes

Last year, Wietse Coppes, curator of Mondrian & De Stijl at the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, gave a lecture at Villa Mondriaan on the 150th anniversary of Mondrian’s birth titled ‘Mondrian in the Picture’. This year he will return on Friday, March 3, with a lecture on Mondrian and photography, entitled ‘Mondrian in Pictures’. Together with colleague Leo Jansen, Coppes published a book on Jan. 13 containing all 411 of Mondrian’s portrait and studio photographs. The research they did on the photographs revealed surprising new insights, particularly about the person behind the artist. In his lecture, Coppes will discuss the creation of the book and the role photography played in Piet Mondrian’s life.

The book Mondrian and Photography. The artist in pictures is a publication of the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History and Time Picture Publishing. It was published in three languages (Dutch, English and French) and is on sale at the better bookstores, for a suggested retail price of € 59.95.

This lecture will take place on Friday, March 3, at 16:00 in museum Villa Mondriaan.

The cost is €12 euros per person. Friends of Villa Mondrian pay €10 euros per person.
